Terms of Use

Intellectual Property & Ownership: All content on The Broken Typewriter, including articles, columns, photography (unless otherwise stated) and interviews, is the original work of Tania Finch and her contributors. This work is protected under the Copyright Act of Canada.

Photography and Images
All original photographs taken by Tania Finch are protected by copyright and carry visible watermarks or clear credit in the captions.

These images may not be copied, reproduced, downloaded, modified, scraped, adapted, or used in any way, including as reference material, for style emulation, or as training data for any AI image generation tools or systems, without my prior written permission.

Occasional stock, third-party, or credited images are clearly attributed and are used under appropriate licences. Only my original photographs are subject to the above restrictions.

Unauthorized use of my original photographs, including removal or obscuring of watermarks, will be considered copyright infringement. I reserve the right to pursue appropriate remedies, including legal action and/or licensing fees.

Proprietary Reporting & Licensing: The Broken Typewriter often provides exclusive coverage of specialized events, conferences, and private meetings. This reporting is produced at significant expense.

  1. Commercial Use: Any reproduction of this reporting by commercial media—including the practice of “lifting” unique sourcing, narrative structure, or interview content—is a violation of these terms.

  2. Syndication Fee: Unauthorized commercial use of my original reporting is subject to a flat-rate licensing fee of $400.00 CAD per instance.

  3. Attribution: Use of facts gathered by The Broken Typewriter must be accompanied by a direct citation: “First reported by Tania Finch at The Broken Typewriter.”

Strict Prohibition on “News Lifting”: The practice of “lifting” news — defined as the systematic monitoring, rewriting, or reproduction of my original reporting to be passed off as original work by another outlet — is strictly prohibited.

  • Fact vs. Expression: While facts of public interest are free for all, my unique expression, narrative structure, and specific sourcing of those facts are not.

  • AI Scrubbing: Using AI tools to “wash” or rewrite content to avoid attribution is a violation of these terms.

Mandatory Attribution & Fair Dealing: In accordance with Section 29.2 of the Copyright Act (Fair Dealing for News Reporting), any use of my work must include a clear, prominent citation of The Broken Typewriter and the author’s name.

Unauthorized Commercial Use Fee: Any commercial entity found to be “lifting” or reproducing my work without a prior syndication agreement agrees to pay a Mandatory Syndication Fee of $400.00 CAD per instance.

  • Continued access to the site following the publication of this notice constitutes an agreement to these financial terms.

  • I reserve the right to issue back-dated invoices for documented instances of prior infringement where “absolute proof” of unauthorized reproduction exists.
