It’s about taking the time to ask the important questions and provide the context that matters to the people who live and work in the BC North Peace.

Independent and Reader-Supported
Every article, interview, analysis, and original photograph is produced from the ground up right here in the Peace. As a member of the Independent Press Gallery of Canada and a signatory of the Ottawa Declaration on Canadian Journalism, The Broken Typewriter receives zero government funding, grants, or subsidies.
Instead, this work is funded entirely by readers who believe that independent, comprehensive local journalism is vital to our community’s future. When you subscribe, you are directly supporting a dedicated, ad-free watchdog for our region.
Deep Roots in the Mighty Peace
There’s an old saying that once you drink from the waters of the Mighty Peace, it will always call you back. That has certainly been true for me. Since first moving to Fort St. John in 1981, the Peace has always been home.
Following university, I returned to cover our region, starting out as a staff reporter and photographer at The Northerner. After a few years of freelancing for the Alaska Highway News, I returned to The Northerner as Editor.
Later, freelance work allowed me to specialize in covering industry, business, and agriculture across the BC Peace for publications like Oilweek Magazine, Northwest Business Magazine, The Peace Country Farmer, Oil & Gas Inquirer, and The Patch Review.
In 2007, I pitched and received the green-light to write a column in the Northeast News called The Broken Typewriter - the first seed of the publication you are reading today.
Whether covering municipal politics, education, or economic shifts, my focus has always remained right here in the Peace.
The Broken Typewriter is the culmination of that experience - a 100% local news magazine delivered with clarity, honesty, and a commitment to the craft of independent journalism. Thank you for reading and for supporting local news.
