Back in September, Dr. Kearney metalwork and robotics teacher William McColm promised his students they wouldn’t just learn valuable skills – they’d build something they could actually use and enjoy. On Friday, May 29, that promise came to life with School District 60’s first-ever Go Kart Rodeo at Dr. Kearney Middle School.

The 14 club members put months of hard work on display as they zipped around the track all day, with students from other schools stopping by to have a go on the go karts. Despite steady rain, the event ran almost without a hitch – there were no crashes, and only one broken belt. Fortunately, McColm had a spare ready, and the kart was back on the track in short order.
None of this would have been possible without generous community support. In response to earlier media coverage, local donations helped raise $3,250 for materials and equipment for the 2025/26 program, McColm told The Broken Typewriter.
