Fall Fair going ahead despite concerns
Society incredibly grateful for the support from the community
In spite of earlier concerns that the 76th North Peace Fall Fair might not be able to go ahead, due to the unsafe state of some of the buildings, volunteers have been hard at work to make the grounds and buildings ready for this weekend’s event.
According to a structural engineer’s report, commissioned by the Peace River Regional District, initially to examine the state of the Adeline Kelly Building, many of the structures at the fair grounds are in serious need of repair. Of particular concern, was the stage, which the report showed was beginning to show signs of structural failure. The kitchen also needed immediate upgrades, in order to meet fire and building codes. Since the report was presented to the regional board, there have been a lot of changes at the fair grounds to meet safety requirements.
Randa Braun, Social Media Director for the North Peace Fall Fair, said that the stage has been demolished, and a covered tent is being rented to provide a venue for the Talent Show and bands.
“We’re not able to use the kitchen, so we’re using BBQs to do a portable kitchen,” said Braun. The dining building is also not available, along with several handicraft buildings, so they will be using tents this year instead.
“We’ve got about six to eight extra tents, and a couple of 20 by 40 tents for the Junior Exhibits,” she said. “We’re piece-mealing things together for this year.”
In addition to acquiring tents to house the exhibits and dining areas, all the buildings have received upgrades, including new hand railings, fire extinguishers and updated electrical where needed. Many of the concession booths had pallets for steps, which have now been removed and replaced with gravel ramps to improve accessiblity, as well as safety.
“All the bleachers are getting upgrades, they were all in need of repair,” Braun said. With less than a week to go before the Fall Fair opens, not all the bleachers were able to be repaired in time. Visitors are encouraged bring lawn chairs.
“There are a few more steps to take to make it better for next year.”
Braun said the Fall Fair Society is incredibly grateful for all the donations and support, as well as for the hard work of the volunteers who have come out to get the work done.
